This is not a re-loading thread but this seemed to be the best place to ask. I have always bought my ammo at gun shows or at local gun shops. Once you factor in shipping costs, is it really cost effective to buy from one of the online dealers? I have considered it numerous times but have never purchased online ammo.

Done it with shotgun ammo....Shipping will kill ya...I look for most of my ammo at shops like Bass Pro (there is one 1/2 hr away) or Dick's sporting goods...They will order whatever ammo you request and they eat the shipping..JMO

I can see that the shipping cost of shotgun shells would be rather high. I just got a box of 1000 rds of 223 shipped from MN to NC for $17.50. Box weighed 28.5 lbs. Paid no sales tax, so the shipping cost replaced the taxes.

Yeah you really have to order a large shipment to make the shipping charges work in your favor.

I buy all of my rifle and pistol ammo online. I have found it to be the most ecconomical way to buy. I only buy by the case though, and buying by the box may not be such a bargain.
I always start my search at www.ammoman.com since his prices include shipping. Another good place to look is http://gun-deals.com/ammo

Thanks rob. Ckd out gun deals.com(your 2nd listed) it had 96 different 223 listed, you put in your zip code and it figures in the shipping to your door. You can compare a lot of different vendors at one time, without going all over the net.

Steel at those prices you just need to stop messing around. Just reach out and grab one-tell your wife it's an early Christmas present from her and she can share-she'll understand.:D

STOP kicking your ass around and get down to the business at hand. The longer you wait, the more good time you loose. "LOOSER" DON'T BE ONE!
As for the wife, "Sometimes it is better to ask FORGIVENESS, than PERMISSION". :D
You will really be pissed if another AWB comes about, and you didn't listen to the voices in your head.
BUY M-4LE NOW, BUY M-4LE NOW, BUY M-4LE NOW, BUY M-4LE NOW, BUY M-4LE NOW. Come on, we the little voices are getting tired of this game of yours, listen to us, let us be your guide. Or we will start kicking your ass!

Hmmmm........I never thought of Steel as being "looser". I always thought he was "tight as a tick" or "tighter than bark on a tree". Maybe I'll have to rethink this. :o

That was what you told the wife, huh! ;)

Those are "Genuine" Knowledge Lumps, From none other than the "University of Hardnocks". (Some day I hope to graduate ;) ) That wasn't all me, some was Steels "Conscience". He just didn't know he had one yet.
Some times it is good to listen to those little voices. (But they have gotten me in trouble before :D )
Sorry Steel, but they do look rather "Distinguished", now that the red is gone.

I have a Cabela's, Bass Pro Shop, and 2 Sportsmans Warehouses within 30 minutes of me, plus numerous Big 5 and Sports Authority sporting goods stores, and I still purchase most of my ammo from on line sources. The key is to shop a lot of places, compare prices, and buy in bulk. As far as shipping cost, Arizona has a very high sales tax, (8.4%). I have never had the shipping exceed the sales tax on any of the ammo I've purchased on line. Bill T.

I think I have posted it before, but it never hurts to repeat yourself occasionally.
This is a great site to find the best deals on ammo -

I've been buying a lot from Natchez Shooter's Supply lately, and yes, the key is too buy a large enough amount were the savings offset the shipping cost.
What I like about their site is they have a shipping calculator that will show updated shipping cost when you change the amount in the order, this helps you find the "better" deal.

+1 on CTD. I just received their new January 2009 Catalog and their prices are totally off the chart expensive! Federal .223 XM-193 Ball ammo for $15.00 a box! A CMMG upper kit for $1,000.00! Everything else is just as overpriced. I won't buy a thing from them. If they keep this up they are going to price themselves right out of the market. Shooters won't be taken advantage of. It is purely a ripoff because most ammo is starting to come back down in price because non ferrous metal prices have dropped off in the last several months. Bill T.
