Also you may want to check if the web site hosting service has a way to check for anonymous proxy ip's and block them. Some of the spammers aren't just your run of the mill liberal idiots...

Well I hate to suggest this, but maybe you (CD folks) should enable the 'approval' option for the forums and have new registrants have to be approved.

If that doesn't do it, then have new registrants give a short comment as to why they want access.

Didn't we have to to a checky thingy?

Oh well... I hate people who are so vile they refuse to let anyone else talk, but will gladly spew their tripe over everything that does not agree with them. Then they strut around proudly voicing "I'm open-minded! I'm a good person!". Its a wonder.

If the spammers get out of hand then we will institute the "approval" process for new members. I hate to do that, but we will if we have to. The question becomes, which prodedure requires more work, cleaning out the spam or approving the new members?

Thanks again to steel for doing such a great job during the Super Bowl last night and again this morning.

Thank you Steel for working so hard. Thanks to all the mods for working to keep the forum free of pests. Well... free from pests other than myself.

Obama signed an executive order that the trophy be split between the cities for 182 days/year, the extra day goes to the White House, the Cardinals will share 50/50 in any QVC, SI, and NFL.com royalities for the Steelers, the Cardinals will receive rings that are worth the same as the Steelers and the Cardinals will go to Disney World when the Steelers go to Disney Land. All in the name of 'Fairness' and following the 'Everybody participates and gets a trophy' nuttiness...

Well, I am originally from PA and was rooting against the Steelers as I have done religiously since the Imaculate Reception against my beloved Raiders and I was hoping for an underdog win, but congrats to the Steelers. At least it wasn't any NY team or the Ravens. Posers all....:)

Being a website/forum owner myself I have noticed the spam-bot's seem to find you at around the thousand member mark FWIW. Time to up security because constantly banning and deleting their accounts gest real old after awhile. Even if you go to the extreme of banning every IP, Email addy, and screenname they use they will continue to plague your forum. Yep it is a nightmare, trust me I know.

I simple security trick that actually works is to add a question to registration like this...

"What is the sum of fifty plus seventeen numbers only?" The answer is obviously 67 but since Spam-bot's can't actually read they can not create an account because they don't know what the answer is.

Edit: BTW I also noticed just now that either your forum needs to be optimized or your host has to many databases jammed on to one server or is otherwise having some server CPU trouble.

Got a CPU usage exceeds error just a second ago attempting to submit this post. Your web geeks will know what this means FWIW.

I know you guys are joking here but I have to recommend that nobody clicks on the Spam-bot's links. They are often heavily laden with virus code.

NK777 is correct. If you see a post that looks like it may be SPAM, do not even go into the post, and please DO NOT click on the link.

We are adding several more security questions to the enrollment form. If the bots continue to get past this we will change over to requiring approval for all new members.

You could also use a subscription activation email system. I would use several layers, it's just coding anyway. Anyone who really wants to join wouldn't mind.

Yes I believe that is one of the things we use on my forum but I honestly hate it because it doesn't work well enough. Spam boxes usually trap the automated emails from the forum and sometimes they don't even make it at all. Depends on how somebody sets their email box up.

We will see how well "Moderation" of new members works here. We just changed the requirement as the spammers were continuing to get through this afternoon.

I hope this doesn't keep new members from joining our forum.

How about the verification box routine where you have to put in the letters on the screen? I'm not up that much on web coding, but that might be something to look at.. Your not going to be able to stop live people, just bots..

Charles Daly
02-03-2009, 10:03 PM
We need to stop the bots and live spammers. Hopefully this "moderation" of new members will help us keep the riff raff out. We have to try something.

... If the bots continue to get past this we will change over to requiring approval for all new members.

That's what we had to do even on a wholesale site a few years ago. It was ridiculous how sophisticated some of these bots were at screwing up the enrollment process. We strongly supported a bill requiring prison terms for anyone getting caught using bots to interfere with conducting internet commerce here in Texas, but of course the bill didn't pass - along with almost any bill that had to do with the internet. Most politicians are clueless when it comes to formulating laws to deal with anything that is a "high tech crime".

Depending on how well you know coding, you could track back the ip addresses from the bot/spammers and it will probably lead you to an actual person. You could take legal action, and these days you can claim the crime as an act of terrorism..... ;)

There really is no foolproof way to stop live spammers and Obots (crazed lib supporters). The internet is an open society. How can you tell if someone is a spammer or legitimate member-to-be? You can't. You just have to put in enough verification process to not make it worth their while and have them go away. That puts a small amount of pressure on them but.. How about a tiered system where there are Industry Partners, CD owners, verified members, members and others. Industry partners go through Mr K. CD owners could register their weapons types and serial numbers. If someone registers my serial#, I could email or fax my receipt to you and you could wipe out the spammer and I could register. Verified members could be referred by current verified members. Members could be non-referred. Others could be others. Keep their tier in the database. Part of the policy to join is that their account could be removed at anytime for any or no reason at all. Just wipe out the tier type Others and all those accounts go at once. Just face it, you won't be able to block them all. Maintenance will have to be done. Whew, that's the most I've typed in a while. Time for more coffee...:)

Last night we enabled the moderation of new members. Before somebody can post, we have to approve them. Last night we got seven spammers trying to register. Including the previous spammers and the ones from last night, all were from the Ukraine or Russia.

I highly doubt their political agenda has anything to do with it.

You might be wrong.

It was hackers from the Ukraine who took down numerous websites a few months ago - protesting the Iraq war and voicing out against the USA.

Mongo
02-04-2009, 11:16 AM
Oh yeah, I forgot... I wanted to mention that these same hackers had posted to several of the websites "Stop the war! Vote for Obama!".

All of the attacks were credited to one group who originates from the Ukraine or has an ops there.

So communists or not, its not a secret that terrorists and radicals around the world wanted Obama to win. That's the truly scary thing.

Well that's good then, because the people that attcked Weatherby's site blew it out for months. (Some of that was Weatherby taking their time with the new layout)

Well, it was the only thing I could think of that was unique to each of us. It was not my intent for it to be used for nefarious purposes, but I will gladly accept any firearm that any user wishes to surrender to me...

Ps. please also ship any 9mm and 5.56 stuff that you got. I don't need any 41 as it is my weap of last resort being a SA six.
